Stanford HAI releases the 2026 AI Index Report
Stanford HAI’s 2026 AI Index Report presents a broad data-driven view of artificial intelligence, covering research, technical performance, responsible AI, the economy, science, medicine, education, policy, governance, and public opinion.
The report says AI capability is still accelerating. Industry produced more than 90 percent of notable frontier models in 2025, benchmark performance improved sharply, and generative AI adoption expanded quickly among organizations and university students.
Stanford also highlights the narrowing gap between US and Chinese AI model performance, the concentration of AI data centers in the United States, and supply-chain dependence on advanced chip fabrication. The report warns that responsible AI measurement is not keeping pace with capability gains.
Other takeaways include rapid consumer adoption, rising AI sovereignty policies, and a significant divide between experts and the public over AI’s likely effects on work, the economy, and medicine.
