Alan Greenspan, former Federal Reserve chair, dies at 100

Alan Greenspan, the former chair of the Federal Reserve Board of Governors, died at age 100. His wife, journalist Andrea Mitchell, said he died at home from complications of Parkinson’s disease.

Greenspan led the Federal Reserve for more than 18 years after first being nominated by President Ronald Reagan in 1987. His tenure covered long periods of economic expansion as well as moments of financial stress.

The Federal Reserve said Greenspan’s work helped shape modern monetary policy and strengthen the institution’s credibility. Mitchell remembered him not only as a major economic figure, but as a husband with deep interests in baseball, football, tennis, golf, and jazz.
